Gentle yoga is a highly effective way for people who have physical limitations to experience the many benefits of hatha yoga. In this class, we practice gentle stretching, strengthening, and balancing techniques as well as restorative postures, breathing techniques, and guided meditations that leave the students relaxed, refreshed, and renewed.
If you are recovering from an illness or injury, have a chronic illness, or are fatigued, depleted, or stressed out, gentle and restorative yoga is ideal. Classes include breathing techniques and adaptations of classical yoga postures that gently support the student with props: blankets, bolsters, blocks, balls, sandbags. Students experience renewal, rejuvenation, and an increase in energy.
We begin with gentle stretches to warm the muscles and create space in the body to prepare it for relaxation. Then we move into restorative postures, deeply supported by props so that the student can totally relax and remain in the posture for several minutes, deeply letting go.
Gentle and restorative yoga induces deep relaxation throughout the entire bodymind and teaches time-tested tools to deal with stress and develop the ability to let go of habitual tendencies to hold onto to tension.
This class is appropriate for people of all ages, and for pre- and post-natal women.
The teacher is Susan Morton, founder and director of the Yoga and Meditation Center of Montclair.
