Learn how to relieve and prevent your backaches.
Yoga gives us some great, simple practices that can help those who experience backaches after working out, participating in sports, or as a result of stress and tension. This course is appropriate for athletes, parents and grandparents who are lifting young children, people who sit for extended periods of time at their computers, and those who are experiencing back pain due to the wear and tear of stressful lifestyle.
You will learn how to relieve back of the body achiness and stiffness that include Achilles tendons, calves, hamstrings, gluts, lower back, basically, the whole back of the body, including neck and shoulders where most people hold tension. Yoga emphasizes that we need long, strong, relaxed muscles for a healthy pain-free back. Most people often develop tight back of the body muscles, and then stretch incorrectly which can make matters worse, causing even more pain or discomfort.
We will discuss the basic causes of back pain and how to strengthen and relax the back using a combination of lumbar stabilization and strengthening exercises, yoga stretches, and Yamuna Body Rolling techniques. We'll also do some guided visualization and meditation techniques to deeply relax the muscles, as well as the mind. This class will be taught by Susan Morton, director, The Yoga and Meditation Center of Montclair.
