UNRAVELLING TWISTING ASANAS
An Afternoon Workshop with Susan Wilson

The original yoga “pretzel” pose might be what comes to mind when we think about twists. However, these poses are as intriguing as they are beneficial. From the simplest form of an uncomplicated sitting or lying twist position we can learn to safely guide the body into the more alluring twisting poses. Each time we practice twisting, we are offering ourselves immeasurable physiological benefits. Simple spinal rotation when done with attention to alignment creates more flexibility, stimulates circulation, releases tight back and hip muscles, bringing much needed space and lightness into the spine itself. Keeping the spine flexible is the key to health and vitality according the ancient yoga scriptures. Twisting action promotes health and vitality. One of the main benefits from practicing a twist is that the action allows and encourages flow of vital nutrients, fresh blood and oxygen are then released not only in the spine but in the surrounding organs – the significant squeezing and soaking action – which in turn promotes the body’s own ability to heal.
Seeing and experiencing a variety of twists first from our physical foundation by delving into the basic mechanics of the body allows us to streamline our concentration, thus focusing our awareness so that the body and mind can spiral and revolve together with natural fludiity in these engaging asanas.
From the easy Chair Variation of Bharadvajasana through the many Ardha Matsyendrasana and Marichyasana Variations, this workshop will give you a full understanding of how to unravell, approach and implement the twisting asanas with the ease and grace that is possible for each of us.
Optimum rotation of the spine stretches, strengthens and enlivens the entire torso, giving us greater freedom, poise, elegance and more mobility in all planes of movement
